“28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” Released on Digital Platforms One Month After Theatrical Debut

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple) was released on digital platforms nearly one month after its theatrical run began. Despite receiving positive reviews and getting the green light from Sony Pictures for a third installment, the film grossed just over $25 million domestically and $57 million worldwide, against a $63 million production budget.
The story of The Bone Temple follows the character Spike, played by Alfie Williams, who must join the violent cult led by Sir Jimmy Crystal, portrayed by Jack O’Connell. The film also stars Ralph Fiennes, Chi Lewis-Parry, Erin Kellyman, and Emma Laird. It was directed by Nia DaCosta, known for The Marvels and Candyman, from a screenplay by Alex Garland.
Cillian Murphy, the Academy Award–winning star of Oppenheimer, who served as a producer on the first two installments of 28 Years Later, is set to appear in the third chapter of the new trilogy. The first film in the new trilogy, 28 Years Later (28 Years Later), was directed by Danny Boyle and released last summer, but failed to meet many fans’ expectations. That film earned $70 million domestically and $150 million worldwide.
Sony Pictures confirmed production of a sequel to The Bone Temple last December, though unofficial reports suggest the studio will not rush into filming and may even hand the project over to Netflix. The studio has not come close to the $100 million mark since October 2024, when the animated film Goat approached that milestone.
The franchise began in 2002 with 28 Days Later (28 Days Later) and continued in 2007 with 28 Weeks Later (28 Weeks Later), directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
